San Francisco Announces Bike Sharing Program To Launch Next Year!

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Bay Area bike-lovers, rejoice — a $7.9 million bike-sharing pilot project will roll out next year in San Francisco, San Jose, Palo Alto, Mountain View and Redwood City! If all goes well, one thousand bikes will be available for participants who pay a membership fee in the program.

The program will allow registered members to unlock bikes electronically with a “smart card” or credit card for a set amount of time, with fees determined by how long the bikes are taken out (much like Zipcar). Trips for half an hour or less would be free. And in order to deter would-be thieves, each bike will be outfitted with GPS units and RFID identification tags.

The first bikes will roll out within 12 to 18 months, with the full program ready to go in two years.

Early Opening For Redesigned Northway Exit 6

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

LATHAM – Ordinary drivers might not get much of a charge out of it, but apparently to traffic engineers the Route 7-Northway Exit 6 interchange is a pretty big deal.

“SPUI for short,” said acting State Transportation Commissioner Stanley Gee. “This may be a funny sounding name, but it will move traffic quicker and safer. This is the first SPUI in the Capital Region and the first overhead SPUI in New York State.”

The “SP” in SPUI stands for Single Point. It means one set of lights controls traffic moving in both directions on Route 7, including allowing simultaneous left hand turns onto the Northway in both directions. That’s thinking that wasn’t thought of when the interchange was first built in the middle of the last century.
